Drop-In Record Holder Instructions

Thanks for your purchase! Your Drop-In Shelf displays a vinyl record cleanly on your wall. Slide your record up into the top piece, then drop it down to rest in the bottom piece. Installation takes about 15 minutes, plus 1 hour for the adhesive to set.
In the Box
- Top piece (the one with the deeper groove)
- Bottom piece (the one with the shallow groove)
- Adhesive Command strips (4 pairs per Drop-In Holder set)
You'll Also Need
- A level
- A pencil
- A tape measure
- Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) and a clean cloth or paper towel
- A vinyl record for testing
Check Your Wall First
The adhesive strips hold strongly on smooth surfaces: painted drywall, painted, stained, or varnished wood, glass, tile, and metal.
They will NOT hold on textured walls, wallpaper, brick, concrete, fabric, or rough or non-stick surfaces. If your wall is textured, this mounting method may not be for you.
A few more rules from 3M:
- Freshly painted walls need at least 7 days to cure before applying strips (check your strip packaging, as some 3M products recommend longer)
- Indoor use only, between 50 and 105 degrees F
- Don't mount directly over a bed
One more thing before you start: The adhesive bonds to the wall on the first press and cannot be repositioned. Extra strips are not included, so take your time lining things up before you press anything to the wall.
Step 1: Prep the Wall
Wipe the mounting area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Do not use household cleaners, wipes, or water. They leave a residue that weakens the adhesive.
Step 2: Pair the Velcro Strips
Press the Velcro strips together to make 4 pairs (hook side to loop side). Line up the edges of each pair as precisely as you can. Each pair should be a neat "sandwich" with adhesive backing on both outer sides.
Step 3: Attach Velcro to the Shelf Pieces
Peel the adhesive liner off one side of each Velcro pair and stick the pairs to the backs of the shelf pieces:
- Top piece: one pair near each outer edge of the back
- Bottom piece: one pair near each outer edge of the back
Press each pair firmly for about 30 seconds. Leave the liner on the wall-facing side for now.
Step 4: Position the Bottom Piece
Start with the bottom piece (shallow groove). Hold it against the wall where you want your record to sit. Place your level on top of it, and once it's level, draw a light pencil line along its top corners so you can realign it. This is your alignment guide.
Step 5: Mount the Bottom Piece
Peel the remaining adhesive liners off the Velcro. Line the piece up with your pencil line, double-check it's level, then press firmly against the wall at each Velcro point for about 30 seconds. Remember: get the placement right the first time. The wall-side adhesive won't survive being peeled off and re-stuck.
Step 6: Mark and Mount the Top Piece
Measure 14 1/4 inches up from the bottom edge of the bottom piece and make a small pencil mark on both the left and right sides. These marks show where the top edge of the top piece should sit. Peel the liners, align, check level, press firmly for 30 seconds.
Step 7: Test With a Record
Slide a record up into the top groove, then let it drop down into the bottom groove. It should:
- Sit securely with about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the record covered by the top groove
- Rest in place without tipping forward
Erase any visible pencil marks, drop in your favorite album, and enjoy.
Making Adjustments
The Velcro lets you pull a piece off the wall-mounted strips to fine-tune alignment. Pull the wood piece straight off gently. Never yank and never try to peel the adhesive strips themselves off the wall unless you're removing the shelf for good.
Mounting Multiple Shelves?
Dial in your first shelf completely, including the record test, before starting the next one. Use the first shelf as your reference for spacing and alignment so the whole wall stays consistent.
Removing the Shelf
To remove without wall damage, pull the wood piece off first, then grab the bottom of each adhesive strip and slowly stretch it straight down against the wall until it releases. Never pull the strip toward you, away from the wall.
